In this Digital Performer vs Logic article, we’ll be comparing two of the best digital audio workstations available specifically for Mac OS.

Digital Performer made its first appearance in 1984 when Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) released Professional Composer, one of the first computer programs for Mac OS. The then-newly developed MIDI standard ushered in new sequencing software for arranging music on a digital platform and performing with synthesizers who could work with MIDI and Digital Performer was born. The final version finally provides support for Windows and long list of new, hugely anticipated features.

Logic Pro started out as a MIDI sequencer program. The early versions lacked the intuitiveness of their Windows counterparts like Cubase, but it has since been fully transformed into a full-featured digital audio workstation. The latest version of Logic has arrived almost four years after the previous release. Apple moved from a boxed version to only downloads two years ago, making Logic X available only through the Apple Store.

Digital Performer 8 comes in a beautiful customizable interface. If you are new to Digital Performer, you might take a while to adjust to its unconventional ways. It carves its own unique path as far as functionality is concerned yet manages to spring a few surprises:

  • A very flexible interface makes for a great program but inevitably comes across as a little daunting to beginners
  • Ability to customize the colours and the design of the faders, knobs, meters and mostly everything
  • A single window that hosts multiple customizable views that float and can be infinitely resized and rearranged
  • Song view allows multiple editable Sequences within the same project letting you work on multiple versions of the same project at the same time
  • V-Racks let you create groups or sets of instruments and effects plugins

Logic Pro X has gone through a myriad of changes to its looks over the years. The latest version takes a darker turn with its heavy grey interface.

  • Everything is streamlined, features are more accessible and everything is contained within a single window
  • File browsers, sound controls and toolbars can easily be brought in and out of view when required
  • There are plenty of shortcuts to be found through simple mouse clicks
  • Operations like Crop, Bounce, Split and Join are available in a convenient menu accessible with a single-click
  • Smart Controls let you alter one or multiple parameters simultaneously
  • Advanced Tools let you change the amount of power and control you need. Use this to simplify your menus.

Digital Performer 8 is now compatible with Windows 7 and 8 with new 64-bit platform support. Mac users can select their preferred plugin format, AU or VST but it does not keep you from using the other one.

Logic Pro X does not offer support for anything apart from Apple’s own products. No VST plugins are supported. Apple have also dropped compatibility for old 32-bit plugins but since Live provides enough of its own devices, samples, and virtual instruments, this is not really a huge drawback.
